Matière 1. Art and Design Exchange in the Ucayali.
The Ucayali Region is considered the indigenous heartland of Amazon of Perú and famous for its visionary artists and healers.
Week One
The first week you will spend a few days exploring Pucallpa and immersing yourself in the rich culture of Amazon, Peru. Following, you will travel to Santa Clara, a unique indigenous community dedicated to revitalizing their ancestral traditions. Staying at our “base camp,” take workshops in Shipibo-Conibo art practices with the local artisans. Learn the ancestral techniques of slip fired pottery and the mysterious meaning being their “kené” designs. Reproduce a Shipibo-Conibo traditional decorated pot from start to finish and take fascinating field trip to locate “source materials” in the Ucayali river region. Learn about Amazon and Andean conceptions of creativity and create your own innovations in exchange with the artisans.
Week Two
Experiment, exchange ideas, and experience a new perspective. Gather fresh insights about your life and work and come home inspired.
Arkaea Residencies can be proposed as a independent study credit.
